The Questionnaire: Gayle Wald

How do you get up in the morning?

I wake my 5-year-old, who insists on operating the French press.

Do you succumb to nostalgia?

I definitely think the music of the 1960s and '70s was better.

What's your favorite negative emotion?

Obsessing. Definitely obsessing.

How long can you go without putting paw to keyboard?

Two minutes. My inbox beckons.

Do you prefer to write standing, or must you lie prone in a field of dandelions with a steno pad and a good pen? Or what?

I prefer to write with shoulders pinned to ears and back hunched over keyboard. Writing heals but it also hurts.

The Questionnaire is, as her name suggests, a multifarious and mysterious interlocutor. Chameleon-like, her questions change their color as they approach each new interviewee.
