Quarterly Journal: Fall 2013 Inaugural Issue

The Los Angeles Review of Books launched its inaugural print edition, the LARB Quarterly Journal, in the fall of 2013, fulfilling the promise to publish fun, smart longform writing in both print and digital pages. While LARB started as a digital-only magazine, we believed from the start that the printed book, far from being dead, was in fact alive and well, and remains one of the great alembics for public discourse today.

The Quarterly Journal features reviews, essays, original poetry, short stories, and artist profiles. Pushing the form of the book review into other genres, such as memoir, polemic, and short story, this inaugural issue includes a meditation on the cultural relevance of paper by Jacob Mikanowski, an experiential essay on attending the Arizona Renaissance Festival by Ander Monson, a reflection on the vagaries of race in Los Angeles and beyond by Maria Bustillos, and an in-depth reappraisal of the work of D. H. Lawrence by Marjorie Perloff.
